lyrics

Velcro people
I have this memory of a girl in
a bar restaurant in Brooklyn
wiping her hands on the condensation
of a water glass, to avoid having
to go all the way
to the bathroom
to get clean.
And she had buggy eyes, green
underlined by a pencil
and even more emphasized
in that moment, when
you feel the sun
and darkness in someone’s gaze
all at once. You know how
sometimes
you can just feel how someone
has been to the edges and back and is trying
to make peace
with what is.
I call them Velcro people because
you can feel them ripping
and tearing and tugging
from what once was
and so easily
snug. You can hear
the rash in their voice and see
the dawn breaking
at daylight in their eyes and when
all they have left is the afterburn,
there is nowhere else to go
but to witness the ripping
with them.
You keep on the eyes,
but be careful, don’t miss their hands.
They have touched and cradled and rocked
so much more than
a condensating glass.
